Dental Inlays & Onlays

When a patient does not have enough tooth structure left to support a dental filling, but the tooth is not damaged enough to need root canal therapy, Dr. Travis E. Hampton may recommend an inlay and onlay in Covington, Georgia. Dental inlays are like dental fillings, but the work all lies within the cusps or bumps on the chewing surface of a tooth. Dental onlays are used when more extensive work is required. Onlays cover one or more of the cusps of the tooth. They are sometimes called partial crowns. Dental inlays and onlays are much more durable than traditional fillings and they last up to 30 years. Inlays and onlays can be made from composite, porcelain, or gold.

To place a dental inlay or onlay, our dentists will first remove the decay or an old dental filling. Impressions of the tooth and those surrounding are taken so your dental inlay or onlay can be constructed. When your dental inlay or onlay is complete, our dentists will place it in your mouth to check the fit and color. After any needed adjustments are made, the inlay or onlay is permanently cemented in place.
