Tooth enamel that has been damaged by chips, cracks or fractures can be a serious cause for concern. If you are lucky enough that the damage didn’t expose the sensitive pulp of the tooth your dentist might be able to repair the tooth with a cosmetic bonding procedure. Regardless it is important to address the area before tooth decay can exploit it.

Cosmetic bonding uses a durable resin material that can be color matched to your natural enamel to fill the damaged area. This restores the function, seals out bacteria before they can cause decay and seamlessly restores the appearance of a tooth in your smile.

Before approving the bonding procedure, the dentist will inspect the tooth and take some x-rays. This helps to make sure the remaining enamel is strong and there is no damage to the pulp or root of the tooth. Once it has been determined that the tooth is healthy and strong, the dentist will color match the resin to the natural enamel.

The dentist will then lightly etch the enamel to give the resin a tactile surface to adhere to. The resin is then applied and hardened using ultraviolet light. The dentist will then shape, contour and polish the tooth to match seamlessly with your natural enamel.
