It’s not unheard of for an accidental fall, or a blow to the face to knock one of your teeth out. This can be a very serious cause for concern. If the injury is severe you should consider calling 911 or going directly to the emergency room.

In some cases, a tooth that has been knocked cleanly out of the socket, can be implanted back into your mouth by your dentist. To have any chance of this, you will need to act fast and keep the tooth alive. While you can do this by holding it in your mouth between cheek and gums. there are also tooth preservation products that do a better job. Most come in the form of a can containing a nourishing gel, you simply put the tooth in the can and seal it tight.

If the tooth is deeply fractured or is simply broken off deep in the gums, it most likely will need a root canal or a complete extraction. The sooner you can get to your dentist, the sooner they can assess the situation and remedy the problem to relieve the pain. In a situation like this you can mitigate some of the pain by rubbing a topical oral analgesic on the surrounding gums. Just be sure not to get any onto the exposed pulp or remnants of the tooth.
